Magnesium to Relieve Eye Twiches and Thumping Sounds in Ears?

My Problem

The last few months I have been suffering from a thumping sound in my left ear.  I hear it only when I lay on my left side, and it is a really fast thumping sound just about as loud as my heartbeat  Then I started noticing my left eye twitching.  What was going on with me!?  So I went to the internet to start exploring for answers….

Several forums suggested taking magnesium for the eye twitching, but very few spoke of the ear noise.  So I talked to my chiropractor about it, and she agreed that Magnesium would help.  She let me know that not all Magnesium is the same, and she gave me a list of ones to get and ones to avoid.

My Remedy?

First, let me say my disclosure…. I am not a doctor.  I am only sharing what helped me.  I am also not a sales person, and no one is paying me to say this stuff.  I just want to help others.

  • Best: Chelated magnesium
  • Good: Magnesium citrate, Magnesium glycinate, Magnesium threonate
  • Not so good: Magnesium stearate, Magnesium carbonate, Magnesium oxide.  (Why are these not recommended?  My chiropractor said these are not great because they are like rocks and don’t get absorbed well.)

I went to the drug store, but all I found was Magnesium oxide.  So back home I went, with plans to visit a health food store over the weekend.  Then I looked in my medicine cabinet and found some Natural CALM, which has ionic magnesium citrate.  I had bought this not knowing it was magnesium.  I thought, “I might as well try it.  I have been bothered with that annoying thumping sound for too long.  I have got to try something.” So I poured myself a glass and mixed in 1 teaspoon.  Even though the recommended dose is 2 heaping teaspoons, I only added 1 because I had been warned that it could give me diarrhea and I should start with a little and increase it to the full dosage.

My Results: Vast Improvement with Chelated Magnesium

First, I tried Natural CALM, and it kind of worked.  I took the first dose right after my lunch.  Then an hour later I took a nap, and the noises were gone.  It was so relaxing to just hear my natural heartbeat again.  When I went to bed that night, however, the noises had returned.  I got up and took the other half of the Natural CALM dose, and then I went right back to sleep.  The thumping noises were still there.  Maybe it takes 30 minutes or more to start working.  Maybe I will need to take Magnesium consistently for it to keep working.  Maybe I need a slow release form.  I’ll keep taking Natural CALM and update this blog in about a week.  After a week, I have noticed sometimes the thumping sound sometimes returns. I haven’t given up the search yet!  The next thing I will try is getting Chelated Magnesium instead.  I will let you know what happens!

Next, I picked up some Chelated Magnesium, and that night the sounds stopped completely.  The recommended dose was 4 tablets per day, but I only took 1.  However, on day 3, the thumping sound returned only slightly for a moment.  Overall, I am really pleased with the results of the Chelated Magnesium.
